Upon arrival at this secluded bluff property, you will be immediately greeted with an amazing panoramic view of the majestic river and historic Natchez. Go ahead, leave your bags for a moment and explore the luxuries that this property has to offer. Whether it is unwinding in the Jacuzzi tub, toasting the sunset over the river on the screen porch, or making plans for a romantic couples’ massage during your stay, our goal is to provide you with an exclusive escape from reality.
During your stay in The Mill Cottage, you may notice photographs of Learned’s Mill, a working cypress sawmill that operated in Natchez from 1828 until 1962. The Mill Cottage is named in honor of this mill founded by Andrew Brown in 1828. A skilled architect, an amateur scientist, and a cultured gentleman, Brown shaped the mill into a complex and sophisticated enterprise. In addition to being the oldest operating cypress sawmill in the South, Brown’s company was a near monopoly of the lumber business in Natchez and affected the entire economy of the area. Brown’s stepson, Rufus Learned, became a business partner and took over the mill when Brown retired. The mill was located at the foot of what is now Learned’s Mill Road, where Brown also built his home and gardens, known as Magnolia Vale.
